Everything, as we know, has an end, and that also applied to the first season of Denmark's Next Classic on DR1.
Here at the workshop, there is widespread agreement that the one who closes the party always deserves a place on the podium. Therefore, the joy will still be endless tonight. The last task was to design the 'coolest' armchair with storage space. And from there it went over hill and dale. Janus and Nikolaj threw themselves into the design process with a clear picture that this armchair should challenge existing armchairs. It should be beautiful, functional, and ready to jump on board.
"Design-wise, the armchair is a diametrical opposite to the sofa. We didn't draw anything for it. The only thing we had decided beforehand was that it should have the most beautiful leather upholstery," says Janus. When Janus and Nikolaj design furniture, it's always with a clear idea of what they want to achieve. But it's also with an ability to adjust the design if their eyes are not satisfied with what they see.
"When we got the extremely beautiful, upholstered shell back from the furniture upholsterer, we had to finish all the woodwork on the chair. But when the first version of the legs came on, the chair looked mostly like a drunk pirate. Fortunately, we had time and courage to significantly change the leg construction, and therefore it really became a cool armchair that is nice to look at," says Janus. The armchair takes up a lot of space in its presence and demands attention.
Asymmetrical armchair in leather
"With its legs in walnut, it is completely true to its origin, and all the other classmates from Janus and Nikolaj's design school. The chair's asymmetrical shape and skewed angles invite several ways to settle in. The detail with the possibility of storing your favorite magazine adds a discreet functionality to the chair. The longer you look at it, the cooler it gets. And no matter which angle you see it from, it looks completely different. With fiberglass as one of the primary materials, we had great freedom to model the shape. It's really a cool material to work with. It's a complex armchair that has a really special expression with lots of details, and we're damn proud of it," says Nikolaj.
At the workshop, we completely agree with the judges' assessment this time: it's the coolest armchair! It's the new one in the class, yes, and it has an expression that we haven't seen in the category before. It could just as well have been born in the 1950s, but now it came into the world in 2019 in a workshop in Valby. It stands on the shoulders of other armchairs - Janus and Nikolaj haven't invented the armchair after all. So the framework was given, but the two designers filled new content and came up with this proposal, which ended up on the podium in the last program.
Denmark's Next Classic ends for now
It has been a super educational, hectic, giving/taking process to participate in Denmark's Next Classic, and to the question of whether Janus and Nikolaj would do it again, there is a unanimous "YES". Thank you for following us through the programs. Thank you for all your fine comments and support. We are overwhelmed and happy and on our way out to design more Noyer furniture. At the workshop, we applaud Janus and Nikolaj daily. It's a huge pleasure to work with the two. It never stands still, and we love being along for the ride. As a combined team, we are proud of the performance. And we join in and we are ready for more. So stay a little longer, because more is coming; with or without cameras. So follow along here on the page or on our Instagram and Facebook..
Ed: The armchair has subsequently been put into production, and it can be purchased in both Wool and Leather.
