Care and maintenance
All products from Noyer are made of walnut wood and can last for many years when cared for and maintained thoughtfully. On this page, you’ll find useful advice for daily care, oil treatment, and assembly — based on the same methods and materials we use in our own workshop.
The benefits of wood products
Wood is a living material that brings warmth, character, and durability into the home. It is both hard-wearing and beautiful to look at – making it ideal for functional products that are meant to be used and last for many years.
Daily care
It doesn’t take much to keep your Noyer products looking good day to day. With proper care, you prevent the wood from drying out and keep the beautiful surface for many years.
How do I clean my product daily?
Use a lightly damp cloth – with a small amount of mild soap if needed – and wipe dry with a clean cloth. This applies to shelves, knife magnets, tables, and chairs.
Can I use cleaning agents?
Use only mild soap if necessary. Harsh cleaning agents can dissolve the oil in the wood and leave the surface dull or greyish – and in the worst case, dry out the wood so it cracks.
Should I worry about water?
Yes – wood does not do well when it stays wet for long. Always dry it off with a clean cloth and avoid leaving water sitting on the surface.
How can I avoid stains and marks?
Always wipe up spills immediately – especially liquids like oil, coffee, or wine. Make sure the surface doesn’t stay wet, as moisture can penetrate and cause marks. Use a dry cloth to wipe up any leftover moisture and avoid letting water stand on the wood.
What should I do if the wood looks dull or dry?
It might be time for an oil treatment – we explain more about that in the next section.
Maintenance and oil treatment
Over time, walnut wood can become dry or dull, especially if it is used often or exposed to sunlight. Fortunately, it’s easy to refresh with a bit of oil. Here we explain how to do it and what to pay attention to.
How often should I oil my product?
It depends on use and product
Cutting boards need oiling more often than, for example, shelves or tables. If the wood feels dry and has taken on a greyish look, it’s time. Most products won’t need a new oil treatment for many years. If you’re unsure, you’re always welcome to contact us.
How do I oil my product properly?
Apply a thin layer of oil with a cloth and spread it evenly over the entire surface. Let the oil soak in for 10–20 minutes, then wipe thoroughly with a clean, dry cloth or an old t-shirt. It’s important that no excess oil remains, as this can leave a sticky or rubbery surface. Wear gloves if you like, and make sure you work in an area where spills don’t matter.
Which oil should I use?
We recommend the same oil we use in production – a food-safe oil that gives the right treatment and protects the wood in the long run. A small bottle is included when you buy one of our products. If you need more, you’re always welcome to contact us at pelle@noyer.dk.
Can I wipe off too much oil?
No, you can’t remove too much. The wood absorbs what it needs – the rest must be wiped away. It’s much more important to remove excess oil than to leave any behind. A dry surface shows that the wood has absorbed what it can.
What happens if I don’t wipe off the oil?
Excess oil can create a greasy or sticky surface that’s hard to make nice again. Always make sure to wipe thoroughly after oiling.
Cutting boards – care and maintenance
Our walnut cutting boards are made to be used – and they only get more beautiful over time. Since they’re often in contact with water and food, they need a little extra care day to day. Here are our best tips for keeping your cutting board looking good and functional for many years.
How do I keep my cutting board nice daily?
Rinse and wash by hand with a bit of mild soap. Always rinse both sides – even if you only used one. Dry it with a tea towel and stand it up to dry straight away.
Can my cutting board go in the dishwasher?
No. Never put it in the dishwasher or leave it soaking – it can damage the wood.
How do I dry my cutting board properly?
Stand it upright so air can circulate around both sides. If it lies flat on a wet surface, it may warp or crack. That’s why we include a stand with our larger cutting boards. The stand makes it easy to store the board upright so it dries properly – and it looks great on your kitchen counter too.
How and when should I oil it?
When the board looks dull or greyish, it’s time for an oil treatment. The oiling process is the same as for other products, but let it soak for 20–30 minutes. Wipe thoroughly afterwards. You can’t wipe off too much oil – but you shouldn’t leave excess oil on the surface.
How do I keep the cutting board looking nice for serving?
If you’d like to keep one side nice for serving, use the back side for cooking and cutting. This way, you always have a clean, presentable side ready for guests. Remember to rinse both sides – even if you’ve only used one.
Give your cutting board new life
Over time, your cutting board will get natural signs of use – for many, that’s part of the charm. You can sand it yourself, but we also offer a refresh service in our workshop.

Brass
We treat our brass with a thin, clear lacquer – except for the JN12 side table, which is oiled instead. Both treatments protect the surface and preserve the golden look. Over time, the brass will develop a patina, especially if exposed to moisture or greasy fingers. To clean it, it’s usually enough to wipe it with a damp cloth. Patina is a natural part of brass’s character and will develop beautifully over time. It’s possible to polish the surface, but we don’t recommend it.

Leather
We use high-quality leather that needs minimal care to stay soft and beautiful. Wipe it with a damp cloth when needed. If the leather starts to look dull or dry, you can apply leather grease – a small tin is included when you buy a chair from us. Apply the grease with a cloth, let it absorb for 20–30 minutes, and wipe off any excess. Don’t worry if any product touches the wood – it won’t do any harm and can simply be wiped away.
