Entryway Bench: Balancing Function, Form, and Walnut Joinery

Bænk til entre

The entryway is the most frequently used arrival area in the home. It is where shoes are tied, bags are set down, and coats are taken off. In many homes, this space is narrow, with tile floors and smooth walls dominating the room. A well-proportioned entryway bench provides a stable seat for daily routines while introducing the warmth and grain of solid walnut to the hallway.

A Sculptural Seat for Daily Routines

When we develop seating at our workshop in Valby, Copenhagen, we focus on the balance between everyday utility and sculptural form. An entryway bench must offer a stable surface for brief pauses to put on or take off footwear without blocking passage through the hallway.

Our Bench JN22 is built around a solid walnut frame with a flush-fitted leather seat recessed directly into the wood surface. The design incorporates deliberate asymmetry: the walnut legs have distinct dimensions and placement, and the leather seat is offset along the frame. This structure keeps the silhouette visually light while offering a defined profile from every angle.

Material Contrast in the Hallway

Combining solid walnut with leather creates a tactile contrast to hard hallway surfaces such as tile and plaster. The dark tones and active grain of walnut bring warmth to the room, while the recessed leather seat offers comfort during short stops.

Each walnut plank is selected at our workshop based on grain structure and color, and the joints are crafted with precision. The wood surface is treated with oil at the workshop. You can read more about surface care in our guide to care and maintenance.

Cohesive Wall-Mounted Storage

To preserve clear walking clearance in a narrow entryway, seating can be paired with wall-mounted storage modules. Moving coats and footwear onto the wall leaves floor space open for free passage:

  • Outerwear on the wall: Pair the bench with the Hallway Shelf with Coat Rack JN14 in solid walnut and brass. It features a hanging rail for coats alongside an upper shelf for items that should not sit on the floor or hang on hangers.
  • Clear floor space: The wall-mounted Shoe Shelf JN10, with a depth of 28 cm, keeps shoes organized and lifted off the floor, making it easier to keep the walkway clear.

Handmade at Our Copenhagen Workshop

All our furniture is produced at our own workshop in Valby. Because walnut naturally varies in grain and color, each bench has its own individual expression. Bench JN22 is made to order with a production time of 1 to 2 weeks.
