Danish furniture design developed through close collaboration between architect-designers and cabinetmaking workshops. When Danish Modern gained international recognition in the mid-twentieth century, that momentum was led by figures such as Kaare Klint, Finn Juhl, Hans J. Wegner, and Børge Mogensen. Klint’s work at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts Furniture School established a systematic approach to ergonomics and human proportions, while Finn Juhl introduced sculptural Danish design to international audiences with the 1951 Baker Sofa and his work on the Trusteeship Council Chamber at the UN Headquarters in New York.
Across this tradition, construction started with the natural properties of timber. Today, contemporary solid-wood Danish furniture builds on these same foundational principles: respect for raw timber, visible joinery, and structural proportions built for decades of daily use.
Joinery details and solid American walnut
While mid-century Danish Modern frequently relied on oak, beech, and teak, Noyer works primarily with solid American walnut. Walnut is characterized by its deep, dark tone and distinct grain patterns, which require careful manual sorting in the workshop.
When assembling planks into a tabletop, boards are matched individually to form a balanced surface. A defining feature of our tables is the opposing 45-degree chamfered edge along the perimeter. This profile cuts through the timber layers to reveal the end grain and cross-section of each plank, creating a lighter visual profile without reducing the table's structural stability.
This geometry defines the Dining table JN01 in walnut wood, designed in 2015. The table pairs an octagonal top with precision-angled solid wood legs and subtle copper detailing. The same geometric profile carries over to the Coffee table JN02 in walnut wood, where the lower profile highlights the walnut grain in front of a sofa.
Designing for rest: Armchair JN07
The Danish lineage of upholstered seating emphasizes how the body rests across different postures rather than strict geometric symmetry. During the development of the Armchair JN07 Leather, originally created for the Danish design competition television series Danmarks Næste Klassiker, the objective was to support shifting sitting angles.
The chair pairs an organic upholstered shell with an angular frame in solid walnut. Available in wool or durable leather in black or cognac, the upholstery acquires a soft patina over years of use that complements the oiled walnut frame.
Furnishing with dark hardwoods
Dark timber pieces anchor a room with distinct visual weight. To balance solid walnut furniture within an interior, consider these practical layout principles:
- Contrast against pale surfaces: Dark brown walnut tones stand out cleanly against white or neutral walls, light flooring, and matte architectural finishes.
- Textile texture: Pair solid timber with coarsely woven wool rugs, linen curtains, or smooth leather to create tactile contrast against the hard, oiled wood.
- Perimeter clearance: Angled and octagonal silhouettes require open walking clearance so the chamfered edges, leg joinery, and grain lines remain visible from multiple vantage points.
Care and maintenance for oiled walnut
Solid walnut pieces leave our workshop treated with linseed oil, which shields the wood while deepening its grain. Straightforward care routines keep the wood protected over time:
- Daily cleaning: Wipe surfaces with a dry or lightly dampened microfiber cloth to remove dust and crumbs. Avoid harsh household detergents.
- Oil refreshing: When the surface appears dry after extended use, apply a thin coat of linseed oil along the direction of the wood grain. Allow the oil to penetrate for 10 to 15 minutes, then wipe off all excess oil thoroughly with a clean, lint-free cloth. For full instructions, consult our Care and Maintenance guide.
- Surface protection: Always place coasters and trivets beneath hot cookware, mugs, and damp glassware or vases to protect the timber surface.
