Hallway Storage with the JN14 Coat Rack Shelf: Sizing, Height, and Setup

Entréens visitkort: Stilfuld entréopbevaring med hattehylde JN14

The entryway is often the narrowest room in a house, yet it handles the heaviest daily traffic. Bulky freestanding wardrobes and deep cabinets can crowd narrow hallways, constrict the walkway, and block natural daylight. Mounting storage directly to the wall frees up floor space and lets the wall carry the weight of coats and jackets.

The Hallway Shelf with Coat Rack JN14 pairs a high-level shelf with a garment hanging rail. Built from solid walnut and brass at Noyer’s workshop in Valby, Copenhagen, it provides dedicated space for long coats, hats, and small daily items on a single wall footprint.

Materials and Construction

The top shelf is crafted from solid walnut. Along the front edge, a precise milled profile gives the timber a defined line despite its solid construction. Beneath the shelf, custom brackets hold the combined walnut and brass hanging rail, dimensioned to carry everything from light jackets to heavy winter coats without giving way.

The brass components contrast with the dark walnut grain, pairing a warm metallic accent with the timber beneath the shelf.

Choosing the Right Width

To keep the hallway passable while accommodating different household sizes, the JN14 is produced in four standard widths. Every variation maintains an overall shelf depth of 28 cm, providing room for storage baskets, hats, or folded scarves without jutting uncomfortably into the walkway.

  • 60 cm: Fits compact vestibules, tight entry niches, or small alcoves behind a front door.
  • 70 cm: Suits smaller entryways that need dedicated hanging space for everyday jackets and guest coats.
  • 90 cm: Provides enough width to arrange wooden coat hangers alongside sliding accessory hooks without crowding.
  • 120 cm: Sized for shared family hallways and larger foyers where multiple coats need to hang side by side.

Mounting Height and Clearances

Positioning a combined shelf and coat rail requires a balance between reaching the upper surface and leaving enough clearance beneath hanging garments. Mounting the top of the shelf between 170 cm and 180 cm from the finished floor places the storage ledge within reach for most adults while leaving room for full-length overcoats to hang freely from the rail.

The unit includes black mounting screws for hanging. For detailed installation guidance, refer to Noyer's assembly page.

Hangers and Brass S-Hooks

Combining dedicated hangers with modular hooks allows you to organize different types of outerwear on the same rail:

  • Contoured garment hangers: Pairing the rail with the Wooden hanger JN17 supports the shoulders of structured wool coats and blazers. Measuring 44 cm across, the solid walnut frame preserves the shape of tailored outerwear.
  • Sliding S-hooks: For tote bags, children’s rain jackets, or bicycle helmets, add a solid brass S-Hook in Brass. These slip over the rail and slide aside smoothly when you need to make room for broad hangers.

Balanced Hallway Organization

A well-ordered hallway relies on keeping floor paths clear and wall storage uncluttered. Selecting a wall-mounted rail sized to your wall proportions gives daily outerwear a settled place without overwhelming the entry.
