Sofa Side Table: Choosing the Right Height, Placement, and Proportion

Setting down a cup of coffee or reaching for a book quickly reveals whether a living room arrangement works in practice. A traditional coffee table anchored in the center of the room often requires leaning forward from the backrest each time you reach for a drink. Placing a dedicated sofa side table at the end of the sofa shifts the resting surface directly to armrest height, keeping the central floor clear for easy passage.

The Armrest Rule: Getting the Height Right

While standard coffee tables typically measure between 40 and 45 cm (16 to 18 inches) in height to sit flush with the sofa seat cushion, a side table serves a different ergonomic purpose. As a practical design guideline, the surface of an end table should sit level with your sofa armrest, or within 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) below it. This alignment lets you set down a glass or pick up your phone with a simple horizontal forearm movement, without reaching up or bending down.

If your sofa has low arms or an armless chaise, measure from the seat cushion instead. In that scenario, positioning the tabletop flush with or 1 to 2 inches above the cushion keeps drinks within easy reach. When exact height matches are difficult to find, err slightly below rather than above the armrest. Reaching slightly downward feels natural, whereas reaching over a high edge can feel awkward and look visually unbalanced.

Freeing Walkways and Circulation

In compact rooms or tight conversational nooks, an oversized central table can crowd the space between seating and media units. Substituting a central table with perimeter end tables can open 14 to 18 inches (35 to 45 cm) of clear walkway space. This layout preserves open sightlines through the living room and makes it easier to pass through the space.

Mobility also shapes how these tables perform day to day. A side table rarely stays anchored in one spot. Whether pulled beside an armchair for evening reading or moved to support guests across the room, it benefits from a thoughtful balance between stable weight and easy handling.

Craftsmanship and Profiles from the Valby Workshop

Different seating depths and arm profiles require different proportions. In our collection of handcrafted tables, walnut and brass come together across three distinct side table profiles:

  • Side table JN05: Designed in 2015 by Janus Larsen and Nikolaj Hviid, this table features a slender profile with an adjustable-height top in solid walnut. The ability to shift heights makes it adaptable to sofas with varying arm profiles as well as lower lounge chairs. The front edge includes our signature milled detailing.
  • Side table JN12: Combining solid walnut and brass, this table balances soft curves with defined angles. It provides a stable perch that sits comfortably at the end of a sofa or freestanding in an open corner.
  • Side table JN20: Distinguished by an asymmetrical base, JN20 pairs a solid walnut support angled at 80 degrees with an upright brass brace. Exposed brass joinery secures the tabletop to the base, offering a compact footprint that works independently or alongside larger living room tables.

Solid Walnut Against Living Room Textiles

Placing a side table alongside upholstered furniture creates a direct material dialogue. The deep tones and distinct grain of American walnut provide a grounded counterpoint to woven wools, linens, and soft leathers. The warm timber anchors the corner of the sofa without crowding the room.

Solid wood naturally develops character through daily use. Read more about surface treatment and upkeep in our guide to care and maintenance.

Planning Your Layout

Before selecting a table, measure the height of your sofa armrest and the open floor area around your seating. Decide whether you need a fixed companion for a corner or a mobile perch that can travel between an armchair and the sofa.
